About BT-SLO

BT-SLO Logos Through the Years

We began in 2006 with the logo shown at the bottom - a simple, bold statement. In 2009 we experimented with a new logo that had a lighter feel to it (middle). This one was not quite us. In 2013 we went through another design change getting back to more of our original logo (top).

Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo (BT-SLO) was created from the passions and talents of two people. Theresa Slobodnik, having retired from a professional career with The Gilbert Reed Ballet, was eager to direct a ballet company. Blair London, having danced all his life had just begun taking class with Theresa and was willing to handle the business details of the ballet company & nonprofit organization. Over coffee at Borders Books, the two decided that there could be a new ballet company in San Luis Obispo - Theresa as Artistic Director handling all of the artistic decisions and being the head of the ballet company; Blair as the Assistant Director seeing to the business aspects of the company and the future nonprofit. So, in the early part of 2006, Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo was born.

Since 2006, we have been presenting theatrical ballets at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo (PAC SLO). We have continued this in our own BlackBox Theatre at our studio. We are known for telling stories on stage. We are known for BIG productions.

In our early years, we partnered with American Dance of SLO. Then, in 2009, BT-SLO helped to establish Dance Obispo (DO) located in downtown San Luis Obispo. Dance Obispo and BT-SLO were together for the next four years - DO was the for-profit dance school, and BT-SLO was the nonprofit performing company. In the fall of 2013, Dance Obispo decided it was time to move on to other endeavors. At that point, BT-SLO expanded its nonprofit mission to include a dance school in addition to the performing company. Moving to a couple of temporary locations - still continuing to put professional-quality productions onto the stage - we were fortunate to find a permanent studio/school home at our current location in mid-September 2014.

BT-SLO is single 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (ID: 20-8393945) with two major functions: a Performing Company and a Dance School.  We are passionate about our commitment to both of these functions.
